Bitola's air quality faces significant challenges in the Pelagonia valley surrounded by the Baba, Nidže, and Oblačina mountains in North Macedonia, with the REK Bitola coal-fired power station generating some of the Balkans' highest SO₂ concentrations alongside residential coal burning and vehicle traffic. The enclosed basin topography concentrates power station plumes and urban emissions under winter inversions, making Bitola one of North Macedonia's most persistently polluted urban environments.
