Tuxtla's air quality reflects the Chiapas Central Depression's enclosed Grijalva River valley basin at 523 metres between the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and the Chiapas Highlands, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the government, services, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. The valley's topographic enclosure creates concentration under calm anticyclonic conditions, while the tropical climate's seasonal rain provides periodic atmospheric cleansing and Tuxtla generally maintains moderate Mexican southern highland valley capital readings throughout most of the year.
