Texcoco's air quality reflects Mexico City's eastern metropolitan corridor at 2,250 metres at the famous Lago de Texcoco desiccated lake bed, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the agricultural, industrial, and residential corridor generating elevated PM2.5 from the notorious windblown toxic lake bed dust. The dried Lake Texcoco's saline dust represents one of the Mexico City metropolitan area's most distinctive environmental justice air quality concerns, while the valley's persistent inversions compound the extraordinary lake bed dust episodes throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Texcoco right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Texcoco is medium. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 53.4/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 AM (PM10: 53.4/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Texcoco?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Texcoco will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at medium at 57.0/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (PM10: 57.0/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Texcoco?

Texcoco usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic together with farming and agricultural processing coincide with periods when temperature inversions set in over the valley. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels.

Are air quality levels in Texcoco based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
