Tampico's air quality reflects the flat Tamaulipas Gulf coastal plain's Pánuco River delta position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the PEMEX petroleum refinery, port, and petrochemical corridor generating elevated industrial SO₂ and VOCs alongside vehicle sources. Gulf of Mexico sea breezes provide warm-season ventilation, while the PEMEX refinery's industrial scale represents Tampico's most distinctive local air quality contribution and the flat coastal terrain allows reasonable dispersal throughout most of the year.

These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Sea breezes typically keep conditions in check, except during still weather.
Are air quality levels in Tampico based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
