Pátzcuaro's air quality reflects the Michoacán Purépecha Plateau's Lake Pátzcuaro basin at 2,035 metres surrounded by the Pátzcuaro and Morelia mountains, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the traditional lacquerware, fishing, and cultural tourism corridor contributing local sources. The lake's natural ventilation provides some dispersal, while winter inversions in the enclosed volcanic plateau lake basin create seasonal challenges and the traditional lacquerware and wood burning operations add historically distinctive artisanal emissions throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Pátzcuaro?
The biggest local contributors to pollution in Pátzcuaro are traffic on the surrounding roads, wood-burning stoves, as well as harbour and shipping traffic, particularly once temperature inversions set in over the valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. This is most pronounced in winter, when inversions are more frequent.
Are air quality levels in Pátzcuaro based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
