Parral's air quality reflects the Chihuahuan Desert highland's Parral River valley at 1,710 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the silver and gold mining — Parral being the site of Pancho Villa's assassination and historic silver wealth — and agricultural corridor contributing elevated mineral dust alongside vehicle sources. The elevated plateau position aids dispersal on most days, while the mining operations' distinctive mineral dust represents the most locally notable air quality contribution throughout most of the year.

These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Such events are most common in the drier shoulder seasons.

Are air quality levels in Parral based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
