Orizaba's air quality reflects the Veracruz Sierra Madre Oriental's deeply enclosed Orizaba canyon valley at 1,230 metres beneath the iconic Pico de Orizaba volcano, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the textile, beer brewing — Orizaba being home to the famous Modelo brewery — and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. The dramatic canyon enclosure creates severe topographic concentration under inversions, while Pico de Orizaba's fumarolic SO₂ adds a distinctive volcanic geological dimension and Orizaba maintains among Mexico's more topographically challenging mountain canyon city environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Orizaba right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Orizaba is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 79.6/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 AM (PM10: 79.6/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Orizaba?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Orizaba will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at poor at 76.2/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (PM10: 76.2/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Orizaba?
Pollution in Orizaba typically rises when vehicle traffic together with light manufacturing combine, especially once the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. The effect is strongest during the colder months, when inversions set in most often.
Are air quality levels in Orizaba based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
