Oaxaca's air quality reflects the Sierra Madre del Sur's Oaxaca Valley enclosed basin at 1,550 metres surrounded by the Sierra Juárez and Miahuatlán mountain ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the artisan crafts, government, and tourism corridor contributing modest local sources. The valley's topographic enclosure creates concentration under inversions, while the elevated altitude and the surrounding highland setting generally maintain Oaxaca at moderate Mexican highland valley readings throughout most of the year.

The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. The thinner air at this elevation tends to intensify ozone formation.
Are air quality levels in Oaxaca based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
