Lerma's air quality reflects the Estado de México Toluca Valley's eastern corridor at 2,611 metres adjacent to the Lerma River headwaters, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, industrial, and residential corridor contributing elevated local emissions under the valley's persistent inversions. The Toluca Valley's topographic enclosure creates concentration under inversions, while the elevated altitude worsens ozone formation and Lerma generally maintains moderate to elevated Mexican highland industrial valley corridor readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Lerma right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Lerma is medium. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 53.3/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 AM (PM10: 53.3/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Lerma?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Lerma will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at medium at 54.2/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (PM10: 54.2/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Lerma?
In Lerma, traffic on the surrounding roads together with textile and manufacturing operations are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.
Are air quality levels in Lerma based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
