Las Condes's air quality reflects the Santiago metropolitan area's northeastern affluent residential corridor at 860 metres adjacent to the Los Andes foothills, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the upscale residential, financial, and commercial character contributing local sources under the Santiago basin's persistent temperature inversions. The enclosed Central Valley's near-complete Andean topographic trapping compounds emissions, while the elevated foothills position provides marginally better dispersal than the flat valley floor and Las Condes generally maintains moderate Santiago metropolitan readings.

When is air pollution at its worst in La Paz?

La Paz usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic on the surrounding roads coincides with periods when the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. This is most pronounced in winter, when inversions are more frequent.

Are air quality levels in La Paz based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
