Fresnillo's air quality reflects the flat Zacatecas silver mining plateau at 2,190 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the Fresnillo silver mining complex — one of the world's largest silver mines — generating elevated mineral dust PM10 and heavy metals alongside vehicle sources. The elevated plateau position aids dispersal on most days, while the silver mining operations' distinctive mineral dust emissions represent Fresnillo's most locally unique air quality contribution throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Fresnillo right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Fresnillo is fair. O3 is the main pollutant at 26.3/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 AM (PM10: 53.2/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Fresnillo?

When is air pollution at its worst in Fresnillo?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Fresnillo are traffic on the surrounding roads and quarrying activity, particularly once dry spells bring strong winds. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Such events are most common in the drier shoulder seasons.

Are air quality levels in Fresnillo based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
