Coacalco's air quality reflects Mexico City's northeastern metropolitan corridor in the Valley of Mexico at 2,255 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, residential, and commercial corridor generating elevated PM2.5 under the valley's persistent inversions. The enclosed Valley of Mexico's topographic trapping compounds all emissions extensively, while the industrial and residential character maintains moderate to elevated Mexico City northeastern metropolitan corridor readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Coacalco?

Coacalco usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic emissions as well as textile and manufacturing operations coincide with periods when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Coacalco based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
