Chimalhuacán's air quality reflects Mexico City's eastern metropolitan corridor at 2,250 metres in the desiccated Texcoco Lake basin, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the dense urban residential and light industrial corridor generating elevated PM2.5 from the infamous windblown toxic lake bed dust. The dried Texcoco Lake's saline and chemical dust represents one of Mexico City metropolitan area's most distinctive environmental justice air quality concerns, while the valley's persistent inversions compound the extraordinary lake bed dust episodes throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Chimalhuacán right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Chimalhuacán is medium. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 59.3/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 AM (PM10: 59.3/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Chimalhuacán?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Chimalhuacán will be worse than today, with AQI forecast at poor at 63.9/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (PM10: 63.9/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Chimalhuacán?
In Chimalhuacán, road traffic along with heavy industrial and chemical processing are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels.
Are air quality levels in Chimalhuacán based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
