Chihuahua's air quality reflects the flat Chihuahuan Desert plain at 1,423 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the maquiladora manufacturing, cattle, and agri-food corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Chihuahuan Desert dust contributes elevated PM10 during dry windy periods, while the elevated semi-arid plateau provides reasonable dispersal on most days and Chihuahua generally maintains moderate to good northern Mexican desert plateau metropolitan readings throughout most of the year.

Chihuahua usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic emissions and manufacturing activity coincide with periods when dry spells bring strong winds. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. These episodes tend to cluster in spring and autumn.
Are air quality levels in Chihuahua based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
