Antananarivo's air quality reflects the Malagasy Central Highland's enclosed Imerina plateau basin at 1,276 metres surrounded by the Rova and Ambohimanarina ridges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the vehicle density, brick kiln, and charcoal burning corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The highland basin's topographic enclosure creates concentration under inversions, while the dry season's agricultural burning from surrounding Madagascar savanna contributes PM2.5 and Antananarivo generally maintains moderate to elevated African highland plateau capital readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Antananarivo right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Antananarivo is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 65.5/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (HCHO: 65.5/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Antananarivo?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Antananarivo will be better than today, with SO2 forecast at fair at 30.1/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (HCHO: 51.3/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Antananarivo?
Air quality in Antananarivo tends to be worse when traffic emissions, light manufacturing, as well as farming and agricultural processing build up and the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. Residential heating through the colder months is a major seasonal source of particulates.
Are air quality levels in Antananarivo based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
