Worst air pollution Beirut, today and tomorrow

Today (16 July): Air quality in Beirut is poor. AQI and O3 are poor; PM2.5 and NO2 are fair; SO2, HCHO, and PM1 are medium; PM10 and CO are good. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 68.9/100).
Tomorrow (17 July 2026): Air quality in Beirut is fair. AQI improves to medium; O3 decreases to medium; PM1 increases to fair; all other pollutants stay as today. Pollution peaks around 11:00 AM (O3: 55.9/100). Airmine updates local air quality forecasts four times daily.

Beirut's air quality reflects the Mediterranean coastal plain's narrow Metn Mountain base position at 34 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the extraordinary vehicle density, ageing diesel generators — Lebanon's chronic power crisis driving pervasive private generator use — and port industrial corridor generating severely elevated PM2.5. The Mediterranean provides coastal ventilation, while the extraordinary private diesel generator dependence represents Beirut's most distinctive and acute local air quality challenge throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Beirut right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Beirut is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 68.9/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 68.9/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Beirut?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Beirut will be better than today, with PM1 forecast at fair at 29.0/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 AM (O3: 55.9/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Beirut?

Pollution in Beirut typically rises when road traffic and harbour and shipping traffic combine, especially once windblown dust events occur. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light.

Are air quality levels in Beirut based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
