Bishkek's air quality reflects the flat Kyrgyz Chuy Valley's enclosed position at 800 metres between the Tian Shan and Kyrgyz ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, construction, and Soviet industrial legacy corridor contributing local sources. Winter residential coal and biomass heating generates severe PM2.5 under persistent temperature inversions in the enclosed mountain valley, while Central Asian continental dust contributes elevated PM10 and Bishkek generally maintains among Central Asia's more seasonally challenged capital city environments throughout the winter months.
