Pristina's air quality faces some of the Balkans' most severe challenges, with the Kosovo A and B coal-fired power stations immediately southwest of the city generating some of Europe's highest SO₂ and PM2.5 concentrations alongside vehicle traffic and residential wood and coal burning. The enclosed Pristina basin surrounded by the Goles, Drenica, and Kosovo Polje ridgelines creates topographic concentration of power station and urban emissions under frequent winter inversions throughout the heating season.
