Sŏsan's air quality reflects the South Korean Chungnam Asan Bay coastal position adjacent to the Hyundai Oilbank refinery and the Daesan Industrial Complex, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the petrochemical refinery and chemical complex generating elevated industrial SO₂ and VOCs alongside vehicle sources. Yellow Sea breezes provide coastal ventilation, while the petrochemical complex's industrial scale represents Seosan's most distinctive local air quality contribution throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Sŏsan right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Sŏsan is fair. O3 is the main pollutant at 37.0/100. Pollution peaks around 9:00 PM (NO2: 45.2/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Sŏsan?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Sŏsan will be worse than today, with AQI forecast at poor at 67.7/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 PM (O3: 67.7/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Sŏsan?
The biggest local contributors to pollution in Sŏsan are traffic on the surrounding roads as well as steel, cement, and chemical production, particularly once windblown dust events occur. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light.
Are air quality levels in Sŏsan based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
