Sangju's air quality reflects the Gyeongbuk Nakdong River upper valley position at 100 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the apple farming, traditional culture, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. Seasonal Chinese dust transport elevates PM10 during spring yellow dust episodes, while the surrounding Sobaek mountain ranges create topographic variation and Sangju generally maintains moderate South Korean inland Gyeongbuk provincial city readings throughout most of the year.

Are air quality levels in Sangju based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
