Worst air pollution Chech’ŏn, today and tomorrow

Today (16 July): Air quality in Chech’ŏn is poor. AQI, NO2, and O3 are poor; SO2 is fair; PM2.5 and PM1 are medium; PM10, CO, and HCHO are good. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (NO2: 78.0/100).
Tomorrow (17 July 2026): Air quality in Chech’ŏn is very poor. AQI worsens to very poor; NO2 increases to very poor; O3 increases to very poor; SO2 decreases to medium; HCHO increases to fair; all other pollutants stay as today. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (O3: 87.1/100). Airmine updates local air quality forecasts four times daily.

Chech'ŏn's air quality reflects the Chungcheongbuk-do Namhan River valley's partial enclosure between the Sobaek and Taebaek mountain ranges at 315 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the pharmaceutical manufacturing, cement, and tourism corridor contributing local sources. The mountain valley's topographic enclosure creates concentration under calm inversions, while seasonal Chinese dust transport elevates PM10 and Jecheon generally maintains moderate South Korean inland mountain valley provincial city readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Chech’ŏn right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Chech’ŏn is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 78.0/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (NO2: 78.0/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Chech’ŏn?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Chech’ŏn will be worse than today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 87.1/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (O3: 87.1/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Chech’ŏn?

Air quality in Chech’ŏn tends to be worse when road traffic, steel, cement, and chemical production, and manufacturing activity build up and temperature inversions set in over the valley. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Chech’ŏn based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
