Nairobi's air quality reflects the East African Rift Valley's elevated plateau at 1,795 metres surrounded by the Ngong Hills and Aberdare ranges, with vehicle traffic on the surrounding Thika Superhighway and growing manufacturing, construction, and informal industrial operations contributing local sources. The elevated highland position aids dispersal on most days, while dry season vehicle and construction dust contribute elevated PM10 and Nairobi generally maintains moderate East African highland capital readings throughout most of the year.
