Yūki's air quality reflects the flat Ibaraki Prefecture Kinu River plain position adjacent to the Tone River corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the Yūki Tsumugi silk weaving — Japan's UNESCO intangible cultural heritage tsumugi silk — manufacturing, and agricultural corridor contributing distinctive silk dye and organic craft emissions alongside primary vehicle sources. The flat Kanto Plain allows reasonable dispersal, while the silk weaving's distinctive organic emissions represent Yūki's most culturally unique air quality characteristic throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Yūki?

Yūki usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic, textile and manufacturing operations, as well as farming and agricultural processing coincide with periods when winds are light and dispersion is poor. Day-to-day conditions here depend heavily on the weather. Local weather patterns add further day-to-day variation.

Are air quality levels in Yūki based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
