Yotsukaidō's air quality reflects the flat Chiba Prefecture Kujukuri coastal plain position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, residential, and commercial character contributing local sources. The flat Kanto Plain and the Pacific coastal influence allow reasonable dispersal, while summer photochemical ozone from the Kanto corridor is the primary warm-season concern and Yotsukaidō generally maintains moderate Tokyo eastern Chiba suburban readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Yotsukaidō?
Air quality in Yotsukaidō tends to be worse when vehicle traffic, steel, cement, and chemical production, along with light manufacturing build up and summer heat and strong sunlight build up. Photochemical reactions in the heat push ozone levels higher. Sea breezes typically keep conditions in check, except during still weather.
Are air quality levels in Yotsukaidō based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
