Tōkai's air quality reflects the Aichi Prefecture northern Nagoya Bay coastal industrial position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the Nippon Steel Tokai Works generating elevated industrial PM2.5 and SO₂ alongside vehicle sources. Ise Bay and Nagoya Bay breezes provide coastal ventilation, while the steel complex's industrial scale represents Tokai's most distinctive local air quality contribution and the coastal position generally maintains moderate to elevated Aichi northern industrial coastal readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Tōkai right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Tōkai is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 66.9/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 66.9/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Tōkai?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Tōkai will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at poor at 74.6/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 74.6/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Tōkai?
Tōkai usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic emissions and heavy industry such as steel, cement, or petrochemical processing coincide with periods when dry spells bring strong winds. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light.
Are air quality levels in Tōkai based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
