Sumida's air quality reflects the eastern Tokyo metropolitan Sumida River corridor adjacent to Asakusa, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the dense urban commercial, entertainment, and residential character contributing elevated NOₓ. The Sumida River provides limited ventilation, while the broader Tokyo metropolitan regional emissions elevate background and summer photochemical ozone from the vast Kanto corridor is the primary warm-season concern and Sumida generally maintains moderate Tokyo eastern urban corridor readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Sumida right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Sumida is fair. SO2 is the main pollutant at 32.0/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (NO2: 46.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Sumida?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Sumida will be similar to today, with SO2 forecast at fair at 38.8/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 AM (NO2: 51.0/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Sumida?

Air quality in Sumida tends to be worse when traffic emissions as well as petrochemical and refining operations build up and summer heat and strong sunlight build up. Photochemical reactions in the heat push ozone levels higher. Readings are generally lower during the cooler, cloudier months.

Are air quality levels in Sumida based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
