Ōshū's air quality reflects the Iwate Prefecture Kitakami River valley position in the Tohoku agricultural corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the traditional crafts, food processing, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. Consistent Pacific coastal and Ou Mountain breezes provide background ventilation, while the surrounding Kitakami highlands provide topographic variation and Oshu generally maintains good to moderate conditions for a major Japanese Tohoku agricultural corridor city throughout most of the year.

Sea breezes typically keep conditions in check, except during still weather. This natural ventilation is one reason coastal areas often see better readings than inland cities.

Are air quality levels in Ōshū based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
