Nakatsugawa's air quality reflects the Gifu Prefecture Kiso River valley's partial enclosure between the Kiso and Ena mountains at 430 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the traditional Nakasendo post town tourism, manufacturing, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. The surrounding Kiso mountain ranges create topographic enclosure, while the Kiso River valley provides limited ventilation and Nakatsugawa generally maintains moderate to good conditions for a Japanese inland Gifu mountain valley city throughout most of the year.

Local weather patterns add further variation on top of these sources. Background emissions and local weather both play a role in day-to-day changes.

Are air quality levels in Nakatsugawa based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
