Matsumoto's air quality reflects the Nagano Prefecture Matsumoto Basin's partial enclosure between the Northern and Central Japanese Alps at 610 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the precision machinery, optics — Matsumoto being Japan's optical instrument capital — and tourism corridor contributing local sources. The surrounding Japanese Alps create dramatic topographic enclosure, while winter temperature inversions in the mountain basin create seasonal challenges and summer conditions are excellent with clean alpine westerly airflows throughout the warmer months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Matsumoto right now?

When is air pollution at its worst in Matsumoto?

Matsumoto usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic on the surrounding roads along with seasonal tourism traffic coincide with periods when temperature inversions set in over the valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. This tends to happen most in winter, when inversions are most common.

Are air quality levels in Matsumoto based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
