Kyōto's air quality benefits from the historic Kyoto Basin's partial enclosure providing characteristic tranquillity, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the traditional craft, tourism, and cultural corridor contributing modest local sources. The surrounding Kitayama, Higashiyama, and Nishiyama mountain ranges create the classic basin topography, while winter temperature inversions create seasonal challenges and the traditional craft industries' wood burning and lacquer operations add historically distinctive local emissions throughout the year.
