Worst air pollution Kōfu, today and tomorrow

Today (16 July): Air quality in Kōfu is fair. PM2.5, NO2, and PM1 are fair; AQI and O3 are medium; PM10, SO2, CO, and HCHO are good. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 50.5/100).
Tomorrow (17 July 2026): Air quality in Kōfu is poor. AQI worsens to poor; PM2.5 decreases to good; NO2 decreases to good; O3 increases to poor; PM1 decreases to good; all other pollutants stay as today. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 61.0/100). Kōfu's air quality reflects the Yamanashi Prefecture Kofu Basin's near-complete enclosure by the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and Ashigara ranges at 273 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the grape and wine production — Kofu being Japan's wine capital — manufacturing, and tourism corridor contributing local sources. The basin's dramatic mountain enclosure creates severe winter temperature inversions, while the wine industry's distinctive fermentation organic aerosols add a uniquely Japanese viticulture air quality signature throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Kōfu right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Kōfu is fair. PM1 is the main pollutant at 25.3/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 50.5/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Kōfu?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Kōfu will be worse than today, with AQI forecast at poor at 61.0/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 61.0/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Kōfu?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Kōfu are traffic on the surrounding roads, manufacturing and food processing, as well as seasonal tourism traffic, particularly once the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.

Are air quality levels in Kōfu based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
