Kawaguchi's air quality reflects the flat Saitama Arakawa River floodplain position immediately north of Tokyo, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the casting, manufacturing, and dense urban residential character contributing elevated NOₓ. The flat Kanto Plain allows reasonable dispersal, while the broader Tokyo metropolitan regional emissions elevate background and summer photochemical ozone from the vast Kanto corridor is the primary warm-season concern and Kawaguchi generally maintains moderate Tokyo northern manufacturing corridor readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Kawaguchi?

Pollution in Kawaguchi typically rises when traffic emissions, steel, cement, and chemical production, and textile and manufacturing operations combine, especially once warm, sunny weather takes hold. Photochemical reactions in the heat push ozone levels higher. This is far less of an issue outside the warmer months.

Are air quality levels in Kawaguchi based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
