Kai's air quality reflects the Yamanashi Prefecture Kofu Basin's western suburban position at 280 metres enclosed by the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and Ashigara ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, residential, and wine corridor contributing local sources. The basin's dramatic mountain enclosure creates severe winter temperature inversions, while summer conditions are excellent with clean alpine airflows and Kai generally maintains moderate to elevated Japanese Alps enclosed basin readings during the winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Kai right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Kai is fair. NO2 is the main pollutant at 28.5/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 50.5/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Kai?

When is air pollution at its worst in Kai?
In Kai, road traffic together with light manufacturing are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. The effect is strongest during the colder months, when inversions set in most often.
Are air quality levels in Kai based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
