Jōyō's air quality reflects the Kyoto Prefecture Kizu River valley position at the Kyoto-Osaka-Nara metropolitan junction, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, residential, and logistics corridor contributing local sources. The Kizu River valley provides limited ventilation, while the broader Kinki metropolitan regional background and summer photochemical ozone are the primary air quality concerns and Joyo generally maintains moderate Kyoto southeastern metropolitan corridor readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Jōyō?

In Jōyō, traffic on the surrounding roads, heavy industrial and chemical processing, together with textile and manufacturing operations are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when hot, still weather settles in. Strong sunlight reacting with local emissions drives up ground-level ozone. Cooler temperatures for the rest of the year keep this in check.

Are air quality levels in Jōyō based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
