Jōsō's air quality reflects the flat Ibaraki Prefecture Kinugawa River plain position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, agricultural, and residential character contributing local sources. The flat Kanto Plain allows reasonable dispersal, while summer photochemical ozone from the broader Kanto corridor is the primary warm-season concern and Joso generally maintains moderate Japanese Ibaraki plain readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Jōsō?
The biggest local contributors to pollution in Jōsō are road traffic, heavy industrial and chemical processing, as well as light manufacturing, particularly once summer heat and strong sunlight build up. Strong sunlight reacting with local emissions drives up ground-level ozone. This is far less of an issue outside the warmer months.
Are air quality levels in Jōsō based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
