Izumo's air quality benefits from its exceptional Shimane Prefecture Sea of Japan and Nakaumi lagoon coastal position adjacent to the famous Izumo Taisha shrine, with consistent Sea of Japan maritime breezes providing reliable ventilation. Vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the electronics, tourism, and agricultural corridor contribute local sources, while the outstanding coastal exposure and the Chugoku Mountains create topographic variation and Izumo generally maintains good to moderate conditions for a Japanese San'in heritage coastal city throughout most of the year.

Maritime airflow normally ventilates the area well, though calmer spells let levels rise. Areas further inland without this ventilation tend to fare worse.

Are air quality levels in Izumo based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
