Hōfu's air quality reflects the Yamaguchi Prefecture Seto Inland Sea coastal plain position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the Matsushita Battery industrial complex and manufacturing corridor contributing elevated industrial emissions. Consistent Seto Inland Sea maritime breezes provide coastal ventilation, while the industrial complex's operations represent Hofu's most distinctive local air quality contribution and the coastal position generally maintains moderate Yamaguchi Seto Inland Sea corridor readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Hōfu right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Hōfu is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 70.7/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 70.7/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Hōfu?
In Hōfu, traffic emissions as well as manufacturing activity are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when dry spells bring strong winds. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light.
Are air quality levels in Hōfu based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
