Hita's air quality reflects the Oita Prefecture Chikugo River headwaters valley position at 141 metres in the Hita Basin, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the forestry, sake brewing, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. The surrounding Kyushu mountains create topographic enclosure, while the Hita-Hikosan highland breezes provide ventilation and the sake brewing operations' distinctive fermentation emissions represent Hita's most locally unique air quality characteristic throughout most of the year.
