Hashima's air quality reflects the Gifu Prefecture Kiso River plain position adjacent to Nagoya's Gifu corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, agricultural, and residential character contributing local sources. The flat Nobi Plain allows reasonable dispersal, while summer photochemical ozone from the vast Chukyo metropolitan corridor is the primary warm-season concern and Hashima maintains moderate Nagoya metropolitan Gifu corridor readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Hashima right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Hashima is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 66.9/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 66.9/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Hashima?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Hashima will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at poor at 74.6/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 74.6/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Hashima?
Pollution in Hashima typically rises when traffic emissions, heavy industrial and chemical processing, together with manufacturing and food processing combine, especially once warm, sunny weather takes hold. Photochemical reactions in the heat push ozone levels higher. This is far less of an issue outside the warmer months.
Are air quality levels in Hashima based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
