Chūō-ku in Tokyo reflects the central Tokyo metropolitan financial and commercial district adjacent to the Nihonbashi corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the extraordinary concentration of financial institutions, department stores, and commercial character contributing elevated NOₓ in the enclosed urban canyon. The Sumida River provides very limited ventilation, while the broader Tokyo metropolitan regional background maintains consistently elevated Tokyo central commercial district readings throughout most of the year.
