Chitose's air quality reflects the Hokkaido central Ishikari River plain position adjacent to New Chitose Airport — Hokkaido's main international gateway — with the airport's aviation operations and vehicle traffic on surrounding roads generating elevated NOₓ alongside the surrounding residential and manufacturing character. The clean Hokkaido boreal setting generally maintains moderate conditions, while the aviation emissions represent the most distinctive local source and wood-burning stoves during extreme Hokkaido winters add seasonal PM2.5 throughout the year.
