Aizuwakamatsu's air quality reflects the Fukushima Prefecture Aizu Basin's partial enclosure between the Iide and Echigo mountain ranges at 212 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the sake brewing, lacquerware, and manufacturing corridor contributing distinctive fermentation organic aerosols alongside primary vehicle sources. The basin's topographic enclosure creates concentration under winter inversions with heavy snowfall, while the extraordinary sake tradition's distinctive yeast emissions represent Aizuwakamatsu's most locally unique air quality characteristic throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Aizuwakamatsu?

Aizuwakamatsu usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic and manufacturing and food processing coincide with periods when temperature inversions set in over the valley. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. This is most pronounced in winter, when inversions are more frequent.

Are air quality levels in Aizuwakamatsu based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
