Aira's air quality reflects the Kagoshima Prefecture northern Kagoshima Bay coastal position adjacent to the Sakurajima volcano, with the volcano's periodic ash fall and SO₂ emissions contributing a distinctive and unavoidable geological air quality dimension. Vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the agricultural and residential character contribute secondary sources, while the volcanic proximity and the Kagoshima Bay position create a distinctive shared volcanic urban air quality experience with Kagoshima city throughout most of the year.

In Aira, road traffic as well as agricultural activity are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when maritime winds die down. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light. This natural ventilation is one reason coastal areas often see better readings than inland cities.

Are air quality levels in Aira based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
