Baghdad's air quality reflects the flat Mesopotamian alluvial plain at the Tigris River confluence at 34 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the extraordinary vehicle density, oil refinery operations, and construction generating elevated PM2.5 and SO₂. The hot dry northwest Shamal winds periodically deliver intense dust storms from the Syrian Desert, while vehicle density, waste burning, and oil infrastructure fires generate persistent elevated readings and Baghdad maintains among the Middle East's more severely challenged major metropolitan air quality environments throughout the year.
