Tehran's air quality reflects the Alborz Mountain base's enclosed Tehran Plain at 1,200 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the extraordinary vehicle density, oil refinery, and industrial corridor generating severe PM2.5 under persistent winter inversions. The Alborz Mountain wall creates near-complete topographic trapping, while the flat Kavir Desert to the south allows dust transport and Tehran maintains among the Middle East's most severely topographically challenged major capital environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Tehran right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Tehran is fair. SO2 is the main pollutant at 40.0/100. Pollution peaks around 12:30 AM (NO2: 50.3/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Tehran?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Tehran will be similar to today, with PM1 forecast at fair at 21.7/100. Pollution peaks around 12:30 PM (O3: 50.2/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Tehran?
Air quality in Tehran tends to be worse when vehicle traffic, steel, cement, and chemical production, and port and shipping activity build up and dry spells bring strong winds. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. These episodes tend to cluster in spring and autumn.
Are air quality levels in Tehran based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
