Rasht's air quality reflects the enclosed Caspian Sea coastal Gilan Province basin at 8 metres surrounded by the Alborz Mountains, with vehicle density and the manufacturing, agricultural, and heating corridor generating elevated PM2.5 under persistent Caspian inversions. The Alborz Mountain wall creates near-complete topographic trapping, while Caspian humidity compounds emission concentration and Rasht maintains among Iran's more severely topographically trapped coastal provincial environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Rasht right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Rasht is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 68.7/100. Pollution peaks around 11:30 PM (NO2: 68.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Rasht?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Rasht will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at poor at 71.6/100. Pollution peaks around 12:30 AM (NO2: 71.6/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Rasht?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Rasht are vehicle traffic, manufacturing activity, and crop farming, particularly once calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Sea breezes typically keep conditions in check, except during still weather.

Are air quality levels in Rasht based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
