Mashhad's air quality reflects the enclosed Kashaf River valley basin at 970 metres surrounded by the Binaloud and Hezar Masjed mountain ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the extraordinary Imam Reza shrine pilgrim traffic, industrial, and heating corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The basin's mountain enclosure creates concentration under winter inversions, while windblown Kavir Desert dust contributes PM10 and Mashhad generally maintains among Iran's more challenged major northeastern provincial capital environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Mashhad right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Mashhad is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 12:30 AM (PM1: 100/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Mashhad?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Mashhad will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 12:30 AM (PM1: 100/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Mashhad?
Air quality in Mashhad tends to be worse when traffic on the surrounding roads and the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.
Are air quality levels in Mashhad based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
