Worst air pollution Karaj, today and tomorrow
Today (16 July): Air quality in Karaj is very poor. AQI and NO2 are very poor; O3 and SO2 are poor; PM2.5 and PM1 are fair; PM10, CO, and HCHO are good. Pollution peaks around 12:30 AM (NO2: 100/100).
Tomorrow (17 July 2026): Air quality in Karaj is very poor. SO2 decreases to medium; all other pollutants stay as today. Pollution peaks around 1:30 AM (NO2: 95.0/100). Airmine updates local air quality forecasts four times daily.

Karaj's air quality reflects the enclosed Alborz Mountain southern foothills at 1,321 metres adjacent to Tehran's western metropolitan corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the extraordinary industrial, vehicle density, and heating corridor generating severely elevated PM2.5 under the Alborz Mountain wall's persistent trapping. The near-complete topographic enclosure compounds all emissions from both Karaj and Tehran's shared airshed, maintaining Karaj among Iran's most severely topographically and industrially challenged major metropolitan environments throughout the winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Karaj right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Karaj is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 12:30 AM (NO2: 100/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Karaj?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Karaj will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 95.0/100. Pollution peaks around 1:30 AM (NO2: 95.0/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Karaj?
Air quality in Karaj tends to be worse when traffic on the surrounding roads and windblown dust events occur. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Residential heating through the colder months is a major seasonal source of particulates.
Are air quality levels in Karaj based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
