Pekanbaru's air quality reflects the flat central Sumatra Siak River valley position at 30 metres in the Riau Province, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the palm oil, Chevron petroleum, and vehicle density corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The flat Sumatran terrain allows limited dispersal, while transboundary haze from Riau Province's own extraordinary peatland fires makes Pekanbaru one of Southeast Asia's most severely and frequently peatland haze-affected provincial capitals throughout most dry seasons.
