Bandung's air quality reflects the Bandung Basin's severe topographic trap at 768 metres, with the surrounding volcanic mountains — Tangkuban Perahu, Burangrang, Patuha, and Malabar — creating near-complete basin enclosure that concentrates vehicle emissions from the surrounding ring roads and the textile, manufacturing, and extraordinary motorcycle density. The basin's topographic concentration under calm conditions and the volcanic SO₂ from Tangkuban Perahu's active fumaroles add a distinctive geological dimension, maintaining Bandung among Indonesia's more topographically challenged urban air quality environments throughout most of the year.

Are air quality levels in Bandung based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
